Piercing Aftercare

NEVER TOUCH YOUR FRESH PIERCING

Unclean hands touching piercings is the most common cause on infection and irritation.

This can cause bacteria to be pushed into the wound. If tightening your jewellery make sure you wash your hands throughly with anti bacteria soap before touching the piercing

NEVER SLEEP ON YOUR PIERCING

By not sleeping on your piercing you will speed up the healing process and ensure you d don't suffer with excess swelling or piercing bumps/scarring.

NEVER TWIST OR ROTATE YOUR PIERCING

This will irritate your piercing and extend the healing time. Moving jewellery in an unhealed piercing can cause piercing bumps/scarring.

WHY DOWNSIZING YOUR JEWELLERY IS IMPORTANT

Downsizing at the right time is crucial for healing because once your swelling has subsided your bar may be too long. This will increase the risk of catching/knocking your piercing and can cause the jewellery to tilt during your sleep, therefore changing the angle of the piercing and possibly causing scar tissue/bumps.

CHECK UPS

Check-ups throughout the healing process are important to ensure the jewellery length is appropriate. if your jewellery is too short it will cause pressure and pain, if its too long it will easily catch on things, effecting the healing. book in anytime, you're never bothering us.

WHAT IS NORMAL?

Initially you may experience some bleeding, localised swelling, tenderness, redness and bruising  this it to be expected and is very common. if your piercing bleeds, use a clean piece of kitchen towel and hold light pressure until bleeding stops.

During healing there may be some discolouration, itching , secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form a crust around the piercing.

A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. this is because the tissue heals from the outside in, and although it feels fine, the interior remains fragile.

Once healed, even a piercing you've had for years can shrink or close up in minutes. this varies from person to person but if you want to keep your piercing do not leave the hole empty.

THINGS TO AVOID

BATHS - Showers tend to be better than baths during healing as baths can harbour bacteria.

SWIMMING - Avoid submerging your piercing in pools/hot tubs/the sea until fully healed.

MAKEUP - Be careful with beauty/make up products, ensure they don't go directly onto your piercings.

TIGHT CLOTHING - Make sure you don't wear any clothing that will rub or press against your piercing. ensure any clothing that comes into contact with your piercing is regularly washed (change your bed sheets/pillows)

ORAL PIERCING AFTERCARE

For lip piercings, follow the instructions above for the outside of the piercings. For the tongue, use the following instructions:

Starting right away, refrain from smoking or eating extremely spicy , chewy or crunchy food, as it will elongate the healing time substantially. Stick to simple foods like soups and pasta and of course ice cream etc. After eating (and if you must smoke, after each cigarette), take a mouthful of corsodyle non-alcoholic antibacterial mouthwash, and swish around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting out.

CLEANING SOLUTIONS TO AVOID

Do not use any solutions containing harsh chemicals such as:

Surgical spirit

Savlon

Dettol

Tea tree oil

Antiseptic

Alcohol

These will sting and irritate your piercing and hinder the healing process.
